Schach/Chess/Aljedrez

Sierra and i played chess really for the first time today.  Actually we had set up the board a few times at a coffee shop (Open Space) or at home, but today was the first time we really played a full game with me helping her by explaining where she could move her pieces according to the rules

I won, but i lost a few key figures carelessly...a queen, a bishop...basically playing against myself.  Anyway, she seemed to have fun, though she probably just wanted to move the figures around however she wanted and pretend she was playing.

I haven't played chess in a long time, though i fondly remember playing it with Dillon, Gregg, and others.  It's been a while since i've played at all, and i definitely haven't played seriously in many years.  What is serious chess playing?  Unhealthy mental obsession?  Memorization of patterns or superhuman like capability for forethought?  I know that chess is supposed to be good for the brain--for making rational, thought-through decisions, though part of me kind of feel like it's pointless.

I do really like the name of the game in the three languages i know it.  Interesting.  It's also interesting to think that the game is hundreds of years or thousands of years old or something.  I am imagining royalty or clergy in the Middle Ages playing it, and sheiks in the dessert or so.

And i like playing chess with our daughter. :)

Chicken annex.  Good thing they have prayer flags too, to keep up their GHP.

No one can soy?
I am liking the window project and might want to set up something like that here...

Clucking Octopus

"...and on that farm he had an octopus, E I E I O! With a 'Cluck! Cluck!' here and a 'Cluck! Cluck!' there, here a 'Cluck!', there a 'Cluck!', everywhere a 'Cluck! Cluck!'..."

And now you know.

Plus: bonus photo!

What kind of person are you dropping from your chamber into the street every morning?

"The fate of the country does not depend on how you vote at the polls -- the worst man is as strong as the best at that game; it does not depend on what kind of paper you drop into the ballot-box once a year, but on what kind of man you drop from your chamber into the street every morning." -Henry David Thoreau, On Man and Nature

Thankfulness

Originally posted on 17 October, 2011. Reposted for seasonal reflection! One of my favorite songs, a waterdeep tune, claims, "a thankful heart prepares the way for you my God". I think that is right. These are photographs taken of kid contributions to a fall thankfulness binder in OMSI's children's area. I actually took these photos back in the summer, but now is a good time to post them as many trees are now exploding with the colors of fall!

While the show represented here seems to be interesting and i am still learning about it, i prefer to pretend that the child meant to write "Gabbo".
