15 June 2007

Hello again

Well, here we are, June 15th, exactly one month since my last post. Currently i have to go to the bathroom. Wait...

Much better.

Recently i've been pretending to be a merchant by selling some books on that .com company (starts w/ an "a") and just uploaded some CDs today which i hope to make at least a small profit on.

Wedding planning has been going well for Kirsten and i, though slowly. We are both busy (still...as usual?) but have steadily been deciding on things and taking action. Tonight we are going on a date! Yay!

This weekend is the Abilities Expo in Long Beach, and i'm supposed to be at work right now, but the dude i do exercises with among other regular wheelchair assistant stuff actually went there with his mom without me! Bummer. Either way, i plan on going tomorrow for a bit to see Art's thing w/DMC and look at some of the other stuff they got going. Should be cool.

Things with Ukraine trainings have been going well. It won't be long now! Most of my funds had come in at my last estimate, though i think i'm still a bit short. God has really blessed me and our whole team with a lot of money so far and we are just here trusting in Him to provide the rest. Other practical preparations are going well, which reminds me, i ought to be working on a few things since i find myself with this unexpected free time...

My room is quite lonely at the moment, but it is also nice to have a room to myself for a short while. This hasn't happened to me in at least two years?

Many Chapman people dropped off the face of the planet once school ended, though a few are just traveling and will be back soon. Others are leaving for a long while, some out of the country, and a few are leaving for good. Looking around me and thinking about my life, i wonder how i got here and what i'm doing. This just makes me want to move even more, of course. The open road calls me--not the hot, black, chemical-covered tar road traversed by gas-powered motor vehicles, but the simple country road, perhaps tread upon by waggons or horse hooves...maybe it's just an old buffalo migration trail or a footpath. Maybe it look something like this:
Maybe it doesn't. But maybe that's close.

The other night Kirsten, Suzanne, and Aro and i went to the Dodger's game vs. the Mets in LA. 'Twas the first time i'd been to that stadium before, and it was a lot of fun, even though i got tired and turned into a zombie at the end. We saw three first-pitch home runs in the 2nd inning (back to back to back!) which was thrilling. Anyway, partaking in a very summery-feeling bout of America's favorite pastime was not what stuck most in my mind. After my intentional butchering of Frost's closing line from "The Road Not Taken," Aro righteously (and rightfully) corrected me with the real version, saying i ruined it. Afterward i felt sorry for having done that and it has made me think about those lines a bit more.

After almost posting the whole poem, i decided i'd just stick with those lines and let you go read the rest of the poem yourself if ye like.

"...
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."

Did I really say you "ruined" it? Hmm. Maybe I was kidding. Or, I am a jerk.

While hiking in Italy I once had a long conversation about whether that poem presented taking the "road less traveled" as a positive experience or a negative one. It's typically assumed to be positive, and in our individualist American culture, that is certainly the dominant interpretation. However, my friend speculated that Frost penned the poem as an old, lonely man looking back, perhaps bitterly, on the choices that led him to be alone.
I don't know which interpretation is right. But the ambiguity does help me view the poem as more than a statement of smug, self-satisfaction. And maybe THAT has made all the difference??

Also: "You take the high road and I'll take the low road and I'll get to Dublin before yooooou..." (traditional folk song)

Maybe you didn't say "ruined." But maybe you are still a jerk.
